During and after the Second World War, the Royal Navy established specialised maintenance and support units responsible for supplying spare parts, equipment and transport to operational fleet units. Aircraft components and vehicles were regularly transported by road, rail and sea, with organised logistics systems in place to ensure critical spares reached their destinations even under combat conditions. These practices built on earlier foundations set by the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), which had overseen naval aviation operations and the transport, supply and maintenance of aircraft from the outset. |
